Educate your Member of Congress about the Iranian New Year and ask them to support the Nowruz Resolution
March 19, 2009, Washington, D.C. - Congressman Michael M. Honda (CA-15th) introduced a resolution in honor of the Iranian New Year, into the House of Representatives on March 19, 2009. The resolution recognizes the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz, expresses appreciation to Iranian Americans for their contributions to American society, and wishes Iranian Americans, the people of Iran, and all those who celebrate the holiday a prosperous new year. “The Iranian American community in my 15th District of California,” noted Congressman Honda, “and throughout the US, continues to enrich the diverse tapestry of this great nation. I’m proud to represent a civically engaged Iranian American community, which is actively invested in bettering California’s 15th District. I’m thankful for the contributions Iranian Americans make in all sectors of American public life, including as government, military and law enforcement officials, working to uphold the constitution of the United States and protect all Americans.”PAAIA has urged the introduction of the Nowruz resolution as a part of its broader efforts to foster greater understanding of the Iranian culture and heritage as well as projecting an accurate and positive image of the Iranian American community that truly reflects our values and achievements. PAAIA has worked closely with Congressman Honda’s office to ensure that the language of the resolution captures the inclusive spirit of Nowruz. For example, at PAAIA’s suggestion Congressman Honda has added language, which states “Nowruz embodies the tradition that each individual’s thinking, speaking, and conduct should always be virtuous, and the ideal of compassion for our fellow human beings regardless of ethnicity or religion.” The resolution has a total of 25 original cosponsors and marks the first time that members of Congress have introduced a measure recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz. Cosponsors include but are not limited to, Representatives John Conyers (MI –14th), Bob Filner (CA-51st), John Lewis (GA-5th), Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24th), Zoe Lofgren (CA-16th), Carolyn Maloney (NY-14th), James Moran (VA-8th), Linda Sanchez (CA-39th), John Tierney (MA-6th), and Frank Wolf (VA-10th). PAAIA wishes to thank NIAC and the many Iranian Americans who have supported this resolution and urged its introduction in Congress.
