Ever since the beginning of my experimentation with film/video, music
has become an integral aspect of the work. Music brings the picture alive.
It intensifies the emotional quality.It absorbs the viewers on the most
primal level. music becomes the soul, the voice , the intuitive, the universal.
One that stands tall in the midst of all the sociopolitical and cultural
specificity of each work. I could not approach seeking a balance in
between authenticity and universality without the inclusion of music.
Sussan Deyhim, the gifted composer/singer, comprehends my concepts
on the most intuitive and intellectual levels.She has consistently delivered
compositions that each time astonish me in how perfectly they accompany
and strengthen the film without ever overpowering or undermining the
importance of the image or the narrative. / Shirin neshat
